More Than a Name

"Zions Bote"
For a while we have been talking about starting a website here at Zion to make news and information about our congregation available to those who are webbable. Zions-Bote is hopefully the first step in that direction. A Blog (web log) of news and announcements, and perhaps even an occasional writing may be found here. We'll see what comes of that last part though.

The name, Zions-Bote, is taken from an old church newspaper used by German immigrants beginning back in the late 1800's. It was a way for people to find out what was happening in the lives of other churches as well as delivering news about distant family members. The spelling may not be correct since I don't speak German, but in case you were wondering, the pronunciation would be something like: SIGHons - BOATay. Your own pronunciation mileage may vary, but so long as you aren't talking to a German-speaker you may actually sound like you're smart.

As for why I chose the name, it seemed to fit. The name of our 150 year-old congregation is Zion Lutheran Church, so the Zion part was natural. The Bote part, well I'll just refer you to the bottom of the above paragraph as to why I chose German to say "Messenger." Besides, Zion has been, for the last 150 years a predominantly German congregation.

So, there it is. Zions-Bote. A quick source for news and announcements about what is happening at Zion Lutheran Church in Wilton, Iowa.
